1
Visit during St. John's and Newfoundland during the summer months in order to spot whales. The migration patterns differ for each species but June through August will generally be the best times to find whales off the coast of the province. If there's a particular whale that you want to see, talk to tour operators about where and when to best spot the whale.
-
2
Book a whale watching boat tour at one of the many tour companies. Most tours will last at least several hours and some do guarantee that you'll spot at least one whale. You can find tours leaving from St. John's and neighboring areas.
-
3
Spot whales and icebergs from Signal Hill and Cape Spear, two parks in St. John's. Bring along a spotting scope or binoculars to help you find whales more easily. You can also scan the ocean view for the familiar whale "blows."
-
4
Head south of St. John's on Route 10 to Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. Many whales come to the bay to feed and birds nest on the islands. Boat tours can get you up close without disturbing the whales.
-
5
Take other nature tours on the ocean and you may catch a glimpse of whales and dolphins as well. Birding tours remain very popular in the province and you may be able to catch sight of whales. Tour operators generally stop and allow guests to view whales when they are sighted.
-
6
Stay at a bed and breakfast or inn that has a good view of the sea. You may find accommodations just outside of the city will provide you with the best views. You may be able to see whales and other ocean birds and mammals from the windows or yard.
