1
Look for a snapping turtle in its habitat. Look in shallow waters of ponds, streams, or other waterways. Look for turtles outside of the water during the evening hours spend most daytime hours in the water. Look for hibernating turtles after late November buried under logs, tree roots, or in the mud.
-
2
Spot a snapping turtle anywhere from Canada south to the Gulf of Mexico and from the east coast to the Rocky Mountains.
-
3
Observe the color of the snapping turtle. Snapping turtles' skin varies in color from gray to black or tan. The turtle's shell can be brown, black, olive, or tan.
-
4
Look for the turtle's most distinguishing features. Snapping turtles have a large head, strong hooked jaw, and a longer than average shell or carapace.
-
5
Watch for aggressive turtle behavior. Snapping turtles do not generally attack unless provoked. And when they attack, it is usually outside of the water. Watch for the turtle's snappiness and watch where you step in shallow waters.
