How to Tell a Right-Handed Boomerang From a Left-Handed One

Boomerangs are aerodynamically shaped objects that have a habit of coming back to you, provided you have mastered the art of throwing them properly. Part of the art of throwing them properly is getting a boomerang that is suited to your dominant hand. A good boomerang will have certain aerodynamic properties that help it fly, but which are only good when thrown from either the right or left hand.

Hold the boomerang in your hand with the orientation you would use to throw it. Position it so that the rounded side of the boomerang is facing you, and the flat side is toward the ground.

    • 2

Examine the arm of the boomerang. The arm, looking at it as a cross section, is shaped like an airplane wing. Identify which edge of the boomerang is the fat, rounded edge and which is the more tapered, pointy edge.

    • 3

The fat edge, also called the leading edge on a boomerang, should be in your palm. The more pointy edge, also called the trailing edge, should be in your fingers. If this is correct, then whichever hand you are holding the boomerang in is the correct hand. If you are holding the trailing edge in your palm, however, then that boomerang is intended to be used with the other hand.
