How to Slide Down a Fire Pole

Designed to shave critical seconds off of response times, the iconic fire pole made its debut in a Chicago precinct in 1878. Made from varnished pine, these first poles allowed firefighters to bypass the cumbersome spiral staircases by sliding straight down from their living quarters to the engine room. The first brass poles were installed in Boston in 1880.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the landing area for people and obstacles. Sliding down on top of someone could cause serious injury. Announce loudly that you are coming down to prevent people from wandering under you while you are sliding.

    • 2

Grasp the pole with both hands, just above your head. Your palms provide the greatest friction, and are instrumental in regulating the speed of your decent.

    • 3

Wrap your legs around the pole while gripping tightly with your hands. Hold the pole with the soles of your feet on both sides. Press your whole body against the pole.

    • 4

Loosen your grip enough to slide safely down. Go slowly at first to ensure a safe and controlled descent. Use your hands to control your speed. A tighter grip gives you a slower slide.

    • 5

Remove your feet from the pole when you approach the ground. Land on your feet with your knees slightly bent to absorb shock and prevent injury.
