What Are Ranger Plates?
-
The Facts
-
Magpul designed its plates for the end of the cartridge not inserted into the gun, for a variety of reasons. Both types have the same integral loop -- a soft, pliable rubber that you can easily grip with one finger. Most people carry their ammunition on belts, vests or carrying cases, but Magpul claims that its plates make grabbing and holding them easier, to avoid the time wasted when a gun user has to find and grab a cartridge. The flexible loops also have a strong steel plate to protect the cartridge if it gets banged around.
Benefits
-
Relatively easy to install by removing the floorplate of the magazine and sliding the plate into the slot, Ranger Plates also simplify grabbing and holding the cartridges by providing a loop. Magpul makes its plates in colors to match ammunition cartridges, such as black, flat dark earth, OD green and foliage.
Alternatives
-
With duct tape and sturdy fabric, such as nylon, you can create inexpensive loops that perform the same function as Ranger Plates for any type of magazine. Some experienced gun users find no need for such products, and recommend different methods for easier unloading and reloading.
Considerations
-
As accessories, Ranger Plates don't require a permit or license to purchase online or through specific retail distributors or wholesalers. As of July 2011, the company's website sells three PMAG Plates for $15 and three USGI Plates for $20. Instructional online videos can help users install Ranger Plates.
