How to Build a Working Break System for a Go-Kart

Go-kart drivers want to go fast. But in order to go fast safely, go-karts need a way to stop. There are a variety of ways to stop a go-kart, including single and double brakes. The type of brake your go-kart requires depends on the type of cart that you build. Larger, two passenger go-karts need a double braking system. This brake has a brake drum on both sides of the rear axle. Solo go-karts can use a single brake to keep the entire cart lighter.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill with carbide bit
  • Brake pin
  • Brake extension arm
  • 2 two-inch bolts with locking nuts
  • Brake band

Instructions

    • 1

Weld the brake drum to the left-hand side of the rear axle.

    • 2

Attach the rear axle to the frame of the go-kart.

    • 3

Drill a hole through the frame directly in front of the brake drum. Drill a second hole one inch in front of the first. Insert the brake pin through the first hole. Bolt the brake extension to the second hole with a 2-inch bolt and locking nut. Leave the bolt loose enough that the extension rotates freely on the bolt.

    • 4

Wrap the brake band around the brake drum. Push the loop on one end of the band over the brake pin. Press the loop on the other side of the band on the pin at the top of the brake extension. Hook the spring between the pin on the brake extension and the brake pin.

    • 5

Hook the back of the brake rod to the hole in the center of the brake extension.

    • 6

Drill a hole in the front of the go-kart frame. Bolt the bottom of the brake pedal to the frame with a 2-inch bolt and locking nut. Leave the bolt loose enough that the pedal moves freely. Hook the front of the brake rod to the pedal.

    • 7

Press the brake pedal. The pedal pulls the brake rod forward, tightening the band around the drum and slowing the go-kart.
