How to Spin a Stuck Case Out of Die

Reloading ammunition at home is a hobby as well as a means of saving money. Part of the reloading process involves sizing the neck of the brass shell casing. A sizing die is used to accomplish this task. There will be times when the brass case becomes stuck in the die. The case is removed from the sizing die with the use of a few basic tools. Understanding how to accomplish the task will help reduce frustration.

  • Wrench
  • Punch
  • Hammer

Instructions

      Attempt to pull the stuck shell casing from the die. Use a pair of pliers to help pull the shell down and out of the die if possible.

      Loosen the collar on top of the sizing die with a wrench. Turn the collar to the left to loosen. Use a second wrench if necessary to hold the die in place while loosening the collar. Remove the collar from the die.

      Pull the sizing pin from the die and stuck shell casing.

      Insert a center punch into the top of the sizing die and down into the stuck shell casing. Position the end of the punch on the bottom of the shell casing.

      Tap the top of the punch with a hammer to loosen and drive the stuck case out of the sizing die.
