The Correct Way to Lean Into a Corner

Motorcycling is a beloved pastime and an economical mode of transportation. One of the most difficult aspects of biking is becoming a master of cornering, as bikers must lean into the corner and use centrifugal force to stay upright. Cornering correctly can take years to master and should be approached with extreme caution. Pay special attention to your actions when cornering so that you can correct mistakes, and take corners at low speed until you feel sufficiently adept.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear protective clothing and a helmet whenever you are riding your motorcycle.

    • 2

Look ahead for corners and turns. When approaching a corner, reduce your speed and decide on the 'line' or path that you will follow when you are in the corner. Always look at where you want to be next, never at the ground in front of you or at objects or people along the roadside.

    • 3

Slow down to the appropriate speed and switch gears before you enter the corner. Never brake or switch gears while cornering.

    • 4

Keep your head vertical and begin to lean your body in the direction of the turn. For instance, if you want to turn right, lean to the right. Your arms should be relaxed with your forearms parallel to the road surface. Look ahead to where you want to be and point your chin and the shoulder on the inside of the turn in the direction you wish to go.

Accelerate gently as you come out of the corner and move the bike to an upright position.
