How to Crack a Florida Cow Whip

Not to be confused with the bull whips of Indiana Jones fame, Florida cow whips are used to control large herds of cattle. The whips are easy to crack with a little practice. The whips, originally made from leather, are increasingly made from nylon, which is better able to deal with the humidity and damp conditions of Florida's farmlands. It is the cracking sound of the whips that is used to drive cattle from dense vegetation or keep them going on swampy trails. The whip never comes into contact with the animals.

Instructions

      Hold the whip firmly by the handle. Let your arm hang down at your side.

      Walk forward or, if you are riding, let your whip drag alongside you. Wait until the whip is laid out in a line behind you.

      Use your arm and wrist to throw the whip forward. Wait until it is almost fully extended and then pull it back.
