How to Improve Whip Power in Handball

The power of your serve in a game of handball can have a dramatic impact on the outcome of the game. Experienced players know how to use the physics of their bodies to perform something known as the “whip,” in which the speed of the ball is generated more through its path out of the hand than by blunt contact. Improving the power of your whip demands a strong understanding of the proper form for a whip serve; good form ensures you maximize the force of your throw.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw your serving hand backward, parallel to the ground. Your hand should rest about 2 or 3 feet away from your center of gravity.

    • 2

Lead the stroke by thrusting your shoulder forward and taking a step with the leg opposite your serving hand. Your hand should come around the side of your body, and the force from your shoulder arcs your elbow and wrist backward.

    • 3

Snap your elbow forward, followed by your wrist. This should occur in one smooth motion, and is the primary source of power in the whip.

    • 4

Keep your hand cupped and allow the ball to arc through it, starting at the heel of your hand and rolling out over the fingers.

    • 5

Follow through by continuing your hand motion until it points at the wall.

    • 6

Practice your sidearm form whenever you get a chance. The better you are at stepping into the serve and carrying your elbow and wrist through the snap, the stronger the whip becomes.
