How to Get Better at Throwing a Frisbee

While throwing a Frisbee is a fun Saturday activity with your friends or family, perfecting your Frisbee toss requires considerable thought and practice. The perfect Frisbee toss combines grace, power and technique as you learn to control the speed, angle and distance of your throw. Developing your toss requires practice, but the result is a graceful and powerful Frisbee throw that will impress your family and friends and provide a deeper enjoyment for the activity.

Check the angle of release by making a slow motion Frisbee throw, using your standard form. Look at the position of the leading edge of the Frisbee and see if it is angled upward. Also, watch the Frisbee during a normal throw, to see if it angles sharply during your throw. Remember, the Frisbee should leave your hand even with the ground. If the Frisbee leaves your hand at the wrong angle, force yourself to level it or try lifting your outside leg as you throw, forcing your body upward enough to even out the toss.

Watch the Frisbee and make sure it does not wobble during your toss, as a wobble can reduce your accuracy and limit your distance. If you notice a sharp wobble in the Frisbee, review your windup. Practice a windup method that keeps the Frisbee moving along a plane as you prepare to throw. Avoid lifting or dropping the level of the Frisbee during your windup.

Check the spin on the Frisbee as you make your throw, as a Frisbee with too little spin will not stay level in flight. If the Frisbee has too little spin, practice the flick motion you use to release the Frisbee when you throw. Set your wrist back in a cocked position before you throw and flick your wrist forward as you finish the throw, giving the Frisbee a sharp burst of speed and spin as you release it.

Study your grip, ensuring that you keep your fingers against the Frisbee, you do not use just your fingertips, your Frisbee is flush against your hand, and your fingers are in the correct position. Remember, for the standard grip you place your index finger toward the center of the Frisbee and your middle finger along the rim of the Frisbee, while a power grip requires you to place both fingers against the rim of the Frisbee. Use the grip you are more comfortable with, but feel free to practice new grips and change your technique.
