1
Understand the weapon. The hatchet is basically a small axe, and modern throwing hatchets have been designed for maximum balance in flight. The weight and size of the head varies according to the preference of the thrower. A beginning hatchet thrower should chose a hatchet that is neither too large nor too heavy.
-
2
Establish a safe area for throwing before throwing a hatchet or tomahawk. Set up a zone of safety if there are spectators. Make the target substantial enough that the hatchet will stick and not deflect.
-
3
Stand about 10 feet from the target. This is the distance needed by the average thrower for the hatchet to make two revolutions before sticking. Developing a feel for the distance required for the proper number of revolutions takes a lot of practice.
-
4
Take the proper stance. This is critical to successfully throwing the hatchet. Stand with legs spread apart and the weight on the right leg.
-
5
Sight the target without aiming down the hatchet handle. Fix the eyes on the target and align the hatchet so that it is straight. By throwing the hatchet with the blade vertical the hatchet will fly true and be held on its course aerodynamically.
-
6
Bring the hatchet up over the shoulder. Keep an eye on the target, move the arm forward quickly and release when the forearm is parallel to the ground. Watch as the hatchet rotates.
-
7
Practice hatchet throwing. The hatchet is a perfect weapon for throwing but it also requires a lot of practice to do safely and correctly. It is not necessary to invest a lot of money in a fancy throwing hatchet or tomahawk to be successful.
