How to Throw a Sling

A throwing sling is a primitive tool used for hunting or target practice. The sling is either a leather or cloth strap. There is no hard and fast set of dimensions to a throwing sling. As a general rule, if you hold it so your hand is at your abdomen, the sling should hang to just below your hips. To use a sling, place a projectile such as a round stone in the sling, then swing and "throw" the sling forward to propel the stone. This is a difficult skill to master. Use a basic throw to begin your throwing sling training.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold both ends of the sling in your stronger hand. Place a round stone or marble into the center of the sling, and hold the sling so the stone hangs below your waist.

    • 2

Grip the outside end of the sling between your thumb and forefinger. Raise the sling and swing your arms so it circles over your head much like a lariat. Use centrifugal force to keep the projectile in the sling fulcrum.

    • 3

Release the end between the thumb and forefinger as the sling is at ear level. Thrust your arm forward and let the projectile "roll" out of the sling and toward the direction where your arm is pointing.

    • 4

Bring the end of the sling back between the thumb and forefinger and add another projectile. Continue the swing until comfortable with the process and release.
