How to Fire a Taurus .38

The Taurus Model 817 Ultra-Lite is a double-action/single-action .38-caliber revolver. It has a matte stainless steel finish and is built on a compact alloy frame. With its unusual seven-round cylinder, a 2-inch barrel and a weight of just 21 ounces, the Model 817 is designed as an excellent backup sidearm for law enforcement. Soft rubber grips and low-profile sights provide full-sized ergonomics in a compact handgun. The Model 817 measures just 6.6 inches in overall length and is 5.1 inches tall.

Instructions

  1. Loading The Model 817

    • 1

With the thumb of your right hand, push the thumb piece on the left side of the handgun forward to release the cylinder.

    • 2

Push the cylinder with one finger from the right side of the gun so the cylinder swings out to the left.

    • 3

Hold the pistol with the muzzle pointed down and load the cylinder with cartridges.

    • 4

Close the cylinder to its original position.

    Firing The Model 817

    • 5

Put the 817 into firing mode by disengaging the Taurus Security System, if it is engaged. Insert the key into the security mechanism and rotate the key counterclockwise.

    • 6

Assume a stance with your body at a 90-degree angle to the target. Spread your feet 1 to 1 1/2 feet apart. Turn your head to sight the target visually.

    • 7

Line up the front and rear sights of the Model 817 so the blade-front sight is centered in the notch of the rear sight. Take aim at the target and place the bull's-eye square on top of the blade sight.

    • 8

Squeeze the trigger slowly with your index finger, keeping the target steady in the sights until the gun discharges.

    • 9

Eject empty cartridges after all shots are fired by opening the cylinder and pushing down sharply on the extractor rod that protrudes from the front of the cylinder.
