How to Hit a Backspin Backhand in Ping-Pong

There is no more effective defensive shot in table tennis than the backhand slice. It keeps the ball low to the table and prevents opponents from hitting an offensive return. It also forces your opponent to lift up on the ball for a decent return. But the backhand slice is difficult to master and takes a great deal of practice. Understanding the proper way to strike the ball is the key to success.

Instructions

Use only a foam paddle. Sandpaper and inverted rubber paddles don't provide effective backspin.

    • 2

Hit a backhand spin only off low-to medium-height shots. Anything higher should be slammed. Striking a high shot with a backland slice will only result in a high bounce on the other side.

    • 3

Step slightly forward as you turn your paddle back about 45 degrees with your wrist. Keep your elbow slightly bent.

    • 4

Come through the ball with your lower arm. Keep your wrist firm. Don't flick your paddle with your wrist.

Follow through with your paddle to the point you want to hit the ball. Angling the ball is very important, particularly on a slice backhand. Force your opponent to move for the ball. That will make it more difficult for him to get the proper lift, which is necessary to return a backhand slice.
