Micro Multi-Tools

A multi-tool is a device that includes many different and common hand tools along with a knife blade in a pocket-knife like housing. Micro-tools are miniature versions of the multi-tools. Micro-tools are made to go into a pocket or onto a keyring so they are readily available. The tools are very simple and basic.
  1. Keyring Micro-Tools

    • Micro-tools that fit onto a keyring come in two forms: tools that look like a key and those that are smaller versions of multi-tools with a key fob. Key shaped micro-tools typically have a very small knife blade, bottle opener, scissors and at least a flat-head screwdriver. When folded up, they look like a blank metal key. The micro-tools that fit onto the keyring itself are a little more developed than the key style, and usually have a knife, screwdrivers, small pliers and a file.

    Credit Card Minis

    • A credit card micro-tool is a small, thin case shaped like a credit card that houses several small tools. The tool is made to fit into a wallet or billfold. The housing holds tweezers, a small knife blade, file and perhaps a small LED. They are narrow so they do not take up too much space in a wallet.

    Swiss Army Style

    • When it comes to multi-tools, it is hard to beat the classics. For many, the Swiss Army knife is the "original" multi-tool. Victorinox, the maker of the Swiss Army knives, produces a whole series of micro-tools that have everything from knife blades to USB computer drives. Some of the Swiss Army tools have keyring fobs on the end to attach to a keyring.

    Materials and Metals

    • When selecting a micro-tool, look for stainless steel blades and housings if you plan to use it in the backcountry or inclement weather. The stainless steel presents a solid rust barrier (not rustproof, but very resistant). In addition to the steel, if you are using the knife as a small personal grooming tool (like a small Swiss Army knife with tweezers and nail clippers) look for a hard plastic shell with a nice aesthetic appeal.
