How to Take Thule's Lock Cylinders Out

Thule locks are used in a wide variety of Thule products, including bike racks, ski racks and cargo carriers. If you're selling your car and want to keep your Thule product, you have to remove the lock cylinders to remove the product from the car. To do this, you need to use a master key, also known as a change key or universal change key. You should have received one when you purchased your Thule lock. It is the key with no teeth cut into it.

      Obtain a master key. If you cannot find the master key that came with your Thule product, you can obtain one at a local Thule retailer or by calling Thule at (800) 238-2388.

      Turn the lock to the unlock position using the regular locking key.

      Insert the master key into the cylinder all the way until you hear a click.

      Pull out the master key and the cylinder together, wiggling them slightly from side to side.

      Try one of the following methods if you have problems pulling out the cylinder with the change key: Put the cylinder into the locked position instead of the unlocked position; tap the cylinder while wiggling it out; spray a lubricant, such as WD-40, in and around the cylinder, or hold the assembly upside down and use gravity to assist with removal.
