How to Create Your Own Swimming Shorts

Hot summer days lend themselves to cooling off at the old swimming hole or pool. Swim shorts come in handy for these situations, but you don't need to drop extra cash on new trunks. If you have some old nylon workout pants or old bicycle shorts, combine the two to make swimming shorts. Recycle the old duds and head out for a refreshing swim.

Instructions

Launder the pants and old bicycling shorts and let them dry. Take the old cycling shorts and turn them inside out. Remove the chamois cloth from the shorts using the stitching remover. Turn them back from the inside-out position. Put the bicycle shorts on and slip the nylon pants over the shorts.

Cut the pants off 1 inch longer than where the bicycle shorts end. Have an assistant cut them to help prevent you from cutting yourself or making uneven cuts to the pants. Fold the extra inch halfway to the inside of the now-cut pant's legs. Sew this seam to prevent fraying or unsightly edges on the swimming shorts.

Remove the bicycle shorts and put them on the inside of the now cut pants. Sew the upper edge of the bicycle shorts to the inside upper edge of the cut pants. This gives an inner and outer short for swimming.
