The Best Cold Weather Gear for Motorcycles
-
Base Clothing
-
Base layer clothing, including long-sleeved shirts and leggings, sets the tone for keeping warm in cold temperatures. Use materials that protect your skin from excessive moisture, including wool and synthetic fabrics such as rayon, lycra and polyester. Avoid wearing cotton-based clothing, as it will not warm you, nor will it protect you from moisture. According to an article on Sound Rider, you should also avoid sporting clothing, such as shirts and underwear designed for soccer and football, because those types of materials work too well at drawing moisture from your skin and will leave you feeling dry and itchy.
Socks and Boots
-
Wear moisture-preventing socks as well. You can choose from specialty materials, including ceramic and wood fiber blends, or simply wear wool or hemp socks. Once again, avoid wearing cotton socks. Women may wear polyester tights with wool socks on top of them. Choose a boot that is not too tight when wearing your socks. The most ideal types of boots for cold weather are those that are waterproof and that have steel toes to protect your feet from injuries.
Gloves
-
When you're riding in freezing temperatures, your hands will stay warmer with glove liners. Liners made with Lurex, Capilene or Polartec are the warmest, according to Sound Rider. Some even have small top pockets that hold heat packs. Purchase high-quality, insulated gloves that extend up the sleeves of your topcoat before your winter ride. Even with the best gloves, you'll still probably need to stop every hour to warm up your cold fingers.
Neck and Face Warmers
-
Even if you wear a full-face helmet, you'll want to wear additional protective clothing to prevent the cold air and wind from harming your skin. Wear a neck warmer, also called a neck tube or neck gaiter, with a full-face helmet. They are typically made of fleece and will protect your chin and neck. Another option is a balaclava. This type of cold weather gear is similar to a ski mask, but it also covers your neck.
