The Best Ski Wear for Cold Weather
-
Layering
-
All good ski outfits start out with the basic principle of layering. Each of the three layers of ski clothing serves a function in keeping you warm and dry. The base layer pulls perspiration off your skin and manages it so that you keep dry. The mid layer provides insulation to keep you warmer and keeps your inside moisture moving. The outer layer protects from wind and outside moisture, as well as maintains breathability, letting your inner moisture escape.
Types of Base and Mid Layers
-
While a three-layer system serves you well on any given ski day, particularly frigid days require some strategic choices. Opt for mid or heavyweight base layers. Treated silk and wool base layers are particularly good at keeping you warm. Similarly, mid-layers should be heavier materials. Down is a particularly warm choice for cold days, but it can be bulky as a mid-layer, depending upon the build of the specific garment. Higher fill-count down garments keep you warmer. Wool, heavy fleece and synthetics like Primaloft are also good choices.
Types of Outerwear
-
When it comes to your ski pants and jacket, seek water and wind protection to combat colder weather. Look for outerwear made from leading waterproof-breathable materials, like Gore-Tex. When ratings are listed, look for higher waterproof ratings in the 15,000 to 20,000 mm + range. These garments not only protect you better from snow and precipitation, they'll knock down fierce winds, keeping you warmer underneath. Features like fleece chin lining also come in handy on cold days.
Accessories
-
On the coldest days, cover all of your skin. Wear goggles and use a balaclava or face mask to cover up your face. Zip your jacket all the way up or use a neck gaiter to cover your neck. Wear a hat that fully covers your ears.
Also pay attention to your extremities. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Wear liners with either to keep your hands warmer, and consider carrying hand-warming packets to keep warm on the lift. Wear heavy wool or synthetic socks and use foot warmers to keep your toes warm.
