How to Ride a Fixie Backwards

Fixed gear bicycles pedal both backwards and forwards. Learning to ride backwards to take advantage of a fixie's bidirectional options requires time, patience, practice and balance.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn how to do a track stand. To perform this maneuver, put your feet on the pedals and position them at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock, turn the front wheel on a 45 degree angle to promote balance and try to keep the bike and your body straight. Rock back and forth on the pedals to help maintain your balance until you can keep the bicycle completely stationary.

Balance on your bike as you would in a track stand position. Once balanced, begin to pedal backwards, keeping your handlebars at a 45 degree angle so that you move in small backwards circles. Adjust the handlebars and your balance when necessary to avoid putting your feet on the ground.

Practice riding your fixie backwards in a straight line, rather than in circles. Slowly bike up a slight incline, then change the pedaling direction of your feet so that you are moving backwards. Keep the front wheel straight, and only adjust it when you need to correct your balance.
