How to Ride a Fixie in a Backward Circle

Riding a fixed-gear bicycle (also known as a "fixie") backward is one of the most challenging tricks a rider can attempt. Riding it backward in a circle is more challenging still. To learn to ride a fixie in a backward circle, you need to first become a master of the trackstand and rocking back and forth, then you can start to practice riding backward and, ultimately, in a backward circle.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your dominant foot on your top pedal and your weaker foot on the bottom.

    • 2

Pull the weaker foot to about the two- or three-o-clock position.

    • 3

Turn your handlebars toward your front foot at around a 45-degree angle.

    • 4

Press down on the front and back pedals evenly to balance the bike in place. This is called a trackstand.

    • 5

Practice trackstands until you are completely comfortable balancing with both your dominant foot and your weaker foot forward.

    • 6

Get into a trackstand with your dominant foot forward. Slowly rock forward until your feet trade places; hold the trackstand with your weak foot forward.

    • 7

Rock back to your original position with the dominant foot forward. Practice rocking back and forth until you have mastered it.

    • 8

Get into a trackstand with your dominant foot forward.

    • 9

Slowly turn your handlebars from their 45-degree trackstand position toward straight while starting to pedal backward.

    • 10

Turn the handlebars midway between straight and 45 degrees to begin the circle. Continue practicing until you can complete the circle.
