How to Correct a Bike Shoe Clip Placement for a Hot Spot

Hot foot is a cyclist's nightmare. Hot foot happens to some people when they distance cycle. It is a burning, itching pain in the bottom of the foot; it can be localized to one spot, or spread out over the sole of the foot. It feels like your foot is scalding. Hot foot is not completely understood, but there are things you can do to minimize a hot spot coming from your cycling shoes. One remedy is to move the pressure point coming from your shoe clip.

      Hold the shoe upside down. Loosen the two setscrews that hold the clip to the bottom of the shoe. There are only two screws. They pass through the center of the clip.

      Grab the clip with your fingers. Twist it from side to side to loosen it. There are two small slots that the setscrews pass through; slide the clip toward the heel of the shoe as far as it will go in the slots. The clip will only move 3/4 inch maximum. Do both shoes.

      Tighten the setscrews. Put on the shoes and ride normally. If the hot spot continues, or worsens, stop riding and take off the shoes.

      Loosen the setscrews and slide the clips all the way forward until they stop. Tighten the setscrews. Ride normally. Evaluate which position the clips feel best and adjust accordingly.
