1
Wrap reflective or bright-colored bicycle tape to the outside of the bike panniers. Make the tape such that it is reflective and noticeable to drivers. Attach a series of reflectors either onto the panniers or the rack holding the panniers.
-
2
Pack the panniers so the weight in each pack is symmetric and the bicycle is balanced for easier pedaling. Attach the panniers to the rack so the tape is readily visible. Wear a helmet with rearview mirror so you can see approaching traffic.

3
Learn the PCH. Sections of the PCH from Ventura County line through the Orange County congestion are heavily trafficked with fast-moving cars. There are sections through Malibu and Santa Monica where the road has little to no shoulder, making panniers a hazard as they stick out farther into the road. Time your trip through these sections for times of the day when traffic is lighter, such as between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Avoid rush-hour traffic in these zones.
-
4
Reserve campgrounds along the PCH ahead of time. These campgrounds fill up quickly, and you might be out of luck should you want to camp using the gear stored in the panniers. Use the California State Parks website to find beach and PCH campgrounds. Reserve these sites through Reserve USA (see Resources).
-
5
Pack extra-strength midsize garbage bags. The weather in coastal Northern California often times is rainy and wet. Line the insides of the panniers with these dry bags to protect your gear and clothing.
-
6
Bicycle with traffic and in a single-file line if touring with other bicyclists. Stay as far to the right as you can safely be.
