Bike Odometer Instructions

An odometer is a gauge that is installed on a bicycle to determine how many miles you have traveled on the bike. Odometers usually can tell you other information as well, since most have a clock and speedometer built in. Odometers also calculate averages regarding how much distance you travel per day and the average speed you travel. Installing an odometer on your bicycle is a simple process than can be done in minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure the odometer in between the handlebars using the bracket that comes with the odometer. The bracket is usually a plastic or metal mounting that is easily screwed together to form a clamp around the handlebar. The odometer snaps into the bracket.

    • 2

Clamp the odometer's magnet to a spoke on the front wheel near the top of the tire. You can use the back wheel, but you will need to have a longer wire, and most odometers are designed for front-wheel use.

    • 3

Connect the odometer's sensor to the fork of the bike frame that secures the wheel. It needs to be positioned so the magnet will pass it as the wheel turns.

    • 4

Secure the wire from the sensor to the odometer by tying it to the bike frame using zip ties. Use however many you need to secure the wire, but three should usually be sufficient.

    • 5

Measure your tire diameter with a tape measure. Program the number into your odometer so it can accurately determine distance and speed each time the magnet passes the sensor on the wheel.

    • 6

Ride the bike to check whether the odometer is giving readings that seem accurate.
