How to Build Your Own Bike Stands
Things You'll Need
- Jig saw or table saw
- 2 pieces of 3/4-inch plywood, 24 inch by 16 inch
- Wood glue
- 1-1/4-inch wood screws
- 2 plumbing flanges, 1-1/4-inch
- 56-inch threaded steel plumbing pipe, 1-1/4-inch
- 90-degree plumbing elbow, 1-1/4-inch
- 2 pieces of 3/4-inch plywood, 5-by-5-inch
- Bench mount bicycle clamp
Instructions

-
1
Use a jig saw or table saw to cut two 24-by-16-inch sections of 3/4-inch thick plywood.
-
2
Laminate these two sections of plywood together with wood glue and 1-1/4-inch wood screws. You now have a sturdy, 1-1/2-inch base for the stand.
-
3
Screw a 1-1/4-inch plumbing pipe flange to the base. Attach it just in from the edge of the short side, in the middle. This flange will hold the stand stem.
-
4
Screw one end of a 56-inch steel plumbing pipe with threaded ends into the flange. The pipe should be 1-1/4 inches in diameter to match the flange.
-
5
Screw one end of a 90-degree, 1-1/4-inch piping elbow onto the top end of the plumbing pipe. The angle should be pointing toward the interior of the stand.
-
6
Screw one end of a 10-inch steel plumbing pipe with threaded ends into the other end of the elbow. This will be the arm that holds up the bike.
-
7
Prepare the bike clamp for attaching to the arm. Cut two sections of 5-by-5-inch plywood and laminate them together (as with the base). On one side of the laminated plywood, screw on another pipe flange in the center. On the other side, screw on a bench mount bicycle clamp, in the center. These kinds of clamps have a mounting plate with screw holes.
-
8
Screw the flange onto the arm of the stand. Your bike can now be secured in the clamp.
