How to Use Zorber for Climbing LEAP Anchors

Zorbers are gear that is often used in rock climbing on challenge courses to provide a belay system for facilitators. A zorber is also the standard gear used for climbing on LEAP anchors, which are the orange anchors bolted into the log or post. Zorbers provide added protection of a dynamic element due to the stitched webbing present inside the casing, near the carabiner.

Instructions

    • 1

Clip the zorber onto your harness. The zorber should be clipped onto the belay loop with a locking carabiner. Before you climb, you should double-check your gear, making sure that your harness is doubled back, the helmet is secure, the carabiner gate is locked, and that your shoes are both appropriate and tied. Also, have someone else check out your gear as well.

Clip into the first LEAP anchor that you can reach with one of the crab claws from the zorber. As you climb, your hip should not be higher than the LEAP anchor to which you are connected.

    • 3

As you approach another LEAP anchor, clip it with your second crab claw. Make sure that it is secure and attached to the LEAP anchor, and then remove the first crab claw from the anchor that is now below you, and therefore closest to the ground.

Continue with the same process until you are at your destination. Double-check along the way each time, making sure that you are clipped in. Also make sure that you are clipped into verified LEAP anchors. If you are clipped into climbing staples, they are not rated to support falls and can come loose. Warning: clipping into climbing staples with a zorber should not be done.

If you happen to fall, the zorber-stitching will only be activated by a force of 450 lbs. Be sure that your zorber is checked and inspected according to manufacturer standards.
