How to go Downhill on Inline Skates

For the average inline skater, the excitement may lie in simply cruising along a nice flat section in your neighborhood or in a park or skating by the beach. For a few, the thrill doesn't stop there--they take their skills to the hills, and get a rush by inline skating downhill. It's not as easy as strapping on your skates, pointing them down the hill and wishing for the best. There's some technique involved to keep you safe.

      You have your equipment, you're mentally prepared, and now you need to find the right hill. Look for a hill that's long with soft grass or sand to either side. If, for any reason, you get out of control, you can steer yourself to fall into the soft surface on either side of the hill. You'll also want the hill to have a long, flat section at the bottom. This gives you ample space to slow down and stop. While inspecting the hill, make sure it's free from any sand, rocks or other debris.

      Now that you've found your hill, it's time to get a feel for it. Take small steps toward your inline downhill adventure by going uphill first. Start at the bottom and skate a little ways up the hill, and then skate down. If you're comfortable, move up higher, and go back down again. Do this until you're absolutely comfortable with the hill. As soon as you're comfortable, skate to the top.

      Once you're at the top, get ready for the adrenaline-filled ride down. There are a few things you can do to ensure that your ride ends safely at the bottom. To help keep your balance, maintain a low center of gravity, and keep your knees bent. You'll also want to keep your weight on your heels. This enables your skates to roll over any imperfections or cracks on the hill. As you're going down the hill, keep your feet shoulder width apart. With these safety measures in mind, skate down the hill.
