Tips For an AB Biller Speargun
-
Choosing a Speargun
-
Speargun hunting is a sport with a variety of different species of fish to target. You need to select an A.B. speargun that fits your needs and will be adequate for catching the species you are targeting. Targeted fish are separated into different categories of "Reef Hunting," which indicate smaller fish, or "Blue Water Hunting," which typically means larger fish species. Reef fish include grouper and snapper, white sea bass, baracuda and calico bass. For this size of fish, select an A.B. Biller speargun that has a gun length of 55-inches and uses a spear diameter of 5/16-inches. Blue Water fish are larger game fish, such as tuna, and require an A.B. speargun with a size of about 60-inches and using a spear diameter of 3/8-inches.
Using The Gun
-
The most important element to using an A.B. Biller speargun is understanding how to use it in the field. This involves getting use to the recoil of the speargun and understanding how it travels in the water. Of course, this depends on whether you decide to purchase one that uses an industrial-style elastic band or the more expensive CO2 canisters to propel the spear. Other factors that influence the tool's use in the field include the size and weight of the spear, as well as the speargun. The best way to get better is to take the speargun out to a secluded area and do test shots, which will show you what shooting areas you need to practice.
Maintenance
-
A properly maintained A.B. Biller speargun will function more consistently and last longer. You should make a habit of going through a few maintenance steps after using the speargun. The most basic of these tips is rinsing the speargun after it has been used. Rinsing the A.B. Biller speargun will prevent the saltwater from degrading the metal or wood components. Also lubricate the working parts with a small amount of silicone, which will reduce the wear on the speargun overtime. If you haven't used the speargun in awhile, bring it in to a certified A.B. Biller shop to make sure all the components are functioning and the tool is safe.
