How to Keep Skateboard Bearings Lubricated

If your skateboard wheels aren't rolling smoothly anymore, it's most likely time to lubricate the bearings. To keep them from getting to the point that they make a gravely sound, clean the bearings every once in a while as general maintenance, even if they aren't that dirty yet to improve the lifespan of your bearings.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Take off the wheels of the skateboard first. Most skateboarders own a skate tool, which is a specialized tool with sockets and screwdrivers that fits into your pocket for easy access. Or grab a 1/2-inch socket wrench. Some boards have special bearing shields that will have to come off as well. Remove any spacers.

    • 2

Pry off the bearing with the wheel. Slide the wheel back onto the axle. Hook the axle tip inside the bearings. Pry the wheel down to pop the bearing out with the wheel. Do this slowly so you don't ruin the bearing.

    • 3

Remove the rubber shield from the bearings with a small pin. Pour either Kerosene or Mineral Spirits into a jar or can. Soak the bearings in the jar for a few hours or overnight. Stir the Kerosene around a bit to get some movement going within the can.

    • 4

Rinse the clean bearings using 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. Some skateboard bearing cleaners don't need to be rinsed with alcohol so always read the cleaner's instruction label first.

    • 5

Dry the bearings. Do this quickly so there won't be any problems with rust. Use a can of compressed air to get them completely dry.

    • 6

Lubricate the bearings. You don't need much. Lubricant will keep the wheels from seizing up and the bearings turning smoothly. Replace the bearings, shields and wheels and you are ready to roll.
