How to Buy a Dive Mask

Scuba diving and snorkeling open the underwater world to first-hand exploration by anyone who can swim and has the desire to see fish and other underwater denizens in their natural habitat. Seeing clearly requires the use of a dive mask. Buying the proper dive mask is the first step into underwater experiences.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the type mask you want: the simple oval mask or the goggle style. Either one will work.

    • 2

Try on the mask to ensure that it fits your face. Hold the mask against your face and inhale a little, gently through your nose. The mask should seal against your face.

    • 3

Remove your hand and let the mask be supported on your face by the suction. If the mask remains in place on your face without leaking air and dropping off, you know that little or no water will leak into the mask when you are underwater.

    • 4

Refrain from tightening the strap on the mask any more than is necessary to keep the mask against your face. While you are submerged, the pressure of the water against the mask will keep the mask in place and minimize leaking.

    • 5

Determine whether or not you need corrective lenses in your mask to allow you to see better underwater. The goggle mask will allow you to use an old pair of glasses inside the mask if you remove the earpieces from the glasses. This is the most frugal way to see better underwater.
