How to Choose Poles for Snowshoeing

Using the right pole for snowshoeing helps you to maintain balance and pace as you travel over the snow. Ski pole materials include carbon fiber, graphite, aluminum fiberglass or composite material. Poles feature a wide array of straps. Any type of skiing or hiking pole works for snowshoeing, so long as the pole is comfortable and sturdy.

Stand in your regular shoes with your arms at your side to calculate pole length. Extending your arms forward from the elbows, measure from elbow to floor. Add 4 inches to find the optimal pole length. Standard length ski poles run 44 to 50 inches. Many poles can be shortened easily so, when in doubt, pick a longer pole.

Shop for used poles that work as well as new ones. In addition to sporting goods stores, specialty outlets such as the Michigan Snowshoe Center (see Resources below) carry poles in a range of styles and sizes. Garage sales, resale shops and online auctions also frequently feature used poles. Check the comfort and stability of grip, wrist strap, basket and tip when buying in person.

Select poles with snow guards or "baskets" that prevent snow from coming up the pole. Because snowshoeing differs from skiing, your pole primarily needs to primarily provide balance. A small basket without holes works best.
