Simple Tarp Shelters Tutorial

Tarp shelters are an inexpensive way to provide shelter quickly. Whether you're on a day hike, backpacking trip, or camping in the woods you should always carry the basic supplies needed to make a simple tarp shelter. Simple tarp shelters can be quickly set up, can hold multiple people, dry out quickly after a rainstorm, and the supplies to build one will take up little space in your backpack.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate two trees that are at least 10 feet apart. Use a simple knot to tie one end of the cord 4 feet high on one tree trunk. Tie the other end of the cord 4 feet high to the second tree trunk.

    • 2

Fold the tarp in half to find the center. Place the tarp's center directly over the cord.

    • 3

Use a fist-sized rock to hammer tent stakes in each of the four corners of the tarp to secure it.

    • 4

Dig a 6-inch trench around your simple tarp shelter if you're in bad weather or it's on the way. Use a stick to dig around the perimeter of your shelter to avoid water pooling inside.
