Instructions

    • 1

Cut a forked branch from a tree, where both limbs are equally sturdy and thick. Leave about a foot below the fork and about three feet above the fork, when the split branches are pointing upward.

    • 2

Notch each limb of the branch with a knife to make a groove so that the ropes will fit in securely when tied and won't slip up or down.

    • 3

Tie two ropes from the forked limbs down to the central post under the fork. Be sure to leave the ropes loose enough that you can fit your shoulders comfortably through the loops.

    • 4

Try on your frame to see if the cords fit snug but not too tight. Make adjustments as needed.

    • 5

Place your jacket or poncho or other sheeting on the ground and wrap your belongings inside. Tie a rope around the bulk if possible to prevent the items from falling out.

    • 6

Tie the belongings to your frame tightly. Make sure it is as high on the rucksack frame as possible while still being secure.

    • 7

Use turf or leaves under the cords on the shoulder to pad if needed. Tie the front straps together across your chest with another cord to prevent cuts in your skin, especially if you're using thin cord.
