How to Dress for the Desert

1
Keep sunglasses on to protect your eyes from the sun. Eyes that aren't protected by high-filter glasses could be susceptible to sun blindness. The sunshine in the desert is bright and reflects off the sand.
-
2
Put on a hat with a wide brim. This will block heat during the hot days and insulate your head during the cold nights.
-
3
Layer a tee-shirt under a long sleeved cotton shirt. The tee shirt controls your sweat and the long sleeves protect your arms from sun damage.
-
4
Opt for a jacket, even in the heat. As long as it is not made of waterproof material, it can protect you from the wind, the sun, the terrain and cold nights. It's tempting to dress as minimally as possible in the desert, but that isn't ideal for survival conditions or even just brief trips. Porous material can allow ventilation without overheating your body.
-
5
Wear a belt. It doubles as a potential sling in survival situations and a barrier against sand finding its way under your clothes.
-
6
Protect your legs with long, windproof, cotton pants. Lightweight fabric is best for body temperature regulation.
-
7
Dress in desert boots. They should have insulated soles and breathable uppers that cover your ankle.
-
8
Apply sunscreen to any remaining visible body parts, such as your hands and face. Choose a high SPF like 50 or 70.
