How to Find a Basketball Agent

The best way to find a basketball agent is, of course, to play so well that the agent finds you. Agents must follow the college game and the prestigious prep summer basketball circuits as part of their business. They can't make contact with or discuss a deal with an amateur player, but they are keeping "score" so to speak. The minute a top player declares himself draft eligible, the agents already know if that player is worth their time. If a player does find himself in need of an agent, he needs to work some other channels to find the best available.

Contact sports agencies online. Some of the options are Priority Sports and Hoopla Inc. The user also has to do research on the agent. Check his client list, his reputation among basketball leagues, and his track record in negotiations. The agent should also have some experience dealing with international leagues.

Visit All Sports Agents Directory and Basketball Agents, online directories of sports agents. They charge a fee for a 1-year membership. The sites provide lists of agents, but the user must contact and research the agents on his own.

College athletes should utilize the experience of any coach or staff member that has worked with agents. Most college programs want their student-athletes to get a chance at the pros, and most do have systems in place to help them. That includes contacts with NBA scouts and agents who can fairly access the potential of that athlete. In turn, the school should have a good idea of which agents have worked well with its past graduates.
