1
Begin by sketching a rugby shirt outline (both front and back) on a piece of paper. Most rugby shirts are collared and short-sleeved, but you can design the shirt with whatever specifications you like. If you're designing a shirt for a specific team or country, you might want to use its colors and insignia. Look at other rugby shirts to get an idea for different design types.
-
2
Most rugby shirts use two or thee colors--select these colors and use markers to experiment with different combinations. Often the collar is a distinctly different color from the shirt. If you want to use a logo or insignia, make it a distinct part of the shirt by making it a contrasting color (always be aware of copyright laws for colors and insignias). Try some shoulder stripes (running from the collar to the edge of the sleeves) for a professional look. If you are designing a more formal shirt, try less dramatic color contrasts with softer colors.
-
3
Try various sleeve designs, including stripes or bars running around the sleeve, as well as running along it. Most rugby shirts have long ovular patches under the arms that run from the armpit down to just above the bottom edge of the shirt. Select a distinct color for these sections.
-
4
Consider several large stripes running across the stomach area from one under arm patch to the other. Often these stripes are outlined by a thin white line for emphasis. Try alternating large areas of color, or large stripes, with small lines for definition. You can try a single-colored shirt, but the distinct rugby shirt is achieved by little bits of definition.
-
5
Keep experimenting with three or four basic colors, different line sizes and stripe patterns. Most rugby shirts are not terribly complex; they make their point with bold colors and a little definition. Show your designs to friends and family who like rugby and make alterations based on their suggestions.
