How to Get a Professional Golf Scholarship

While most people are familiar with football and basketball scholarships, you may not know that it is also possible to get a golf scholarship. Not all states and areas offer one and the competition is usually fierce, but if you are a good player with a strong background, you may be the right candidate for a professional golf scholarship.

Work on your game as much as possible. Perfect your technique and your style long before you plan on applying for a scholarship. Because golf scholarships are not abundant, it's important that you are at the top of your game when the scouts come around.

Look into professional golf scholarships offered by the LPGA Foundation, an organization created to support and encourage junior golfers (see Resources below). The LPGA Foundation offers three basic golf scholarships: the Dinah Shore Scholarship (for female players in their senior year of high school), the Marilynn Smith Scholarship (for the same type of players, but only if they are entering a college that supports golfing), and the Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship (to female players from a minority group).

Make sure you have a strong background. Golf players who are pursuing a professional golf scholarship should demonstrate that they are committed to the game. Participate in games, local championships and city tournaments as much as possible, from as early as possible.

Take lessons if you can. Training under the tutelage of a professional gives you an advantage over other players who have no effective training. Even taking a few lessons from a well-respected instructor can be helpful, especially when cited along with other credits in your application for a professional golf scholarship.

Use the ScholarshipGolf website to locate the best type of golf scholarship for your particular situation (see Resources below). The website allows players to enter some basic information about themselves or to create a detailed account that allows scouts and coaches to find players. Players can even upload videos in order to showcase their style and competency.
