How to Get Recruited by a College Team in Golf

The expense of a college education continues to outpace wage growth and the gap is widening by the day. However, in order to compete in today's job market a person needs a college education. One way to get college paid for is through an athletic scholarship. Golf is a scholarship sport in college that is growing by leaps and bounds. The trick is to get recruited by the college of your choice.

      Compile a list of potential schools that have a golf program. Most schools have a golf program of some sort. Not all schools have full scholarships or even partial scholarship to give. So be sure to check the program classification.

      Participate in as many amateur golf tournaments as possible. The more exposure the golfer gets the better the chances a recruiter will notice him or her.

      Assemble and mail a highlight video of the golfer to recruiters. Often times the recruiters just want to see the golfer on film. Because often these programs rin on limited budgets and it is impossible for a recruiter to see all the potential recruits in person, a video will give them tangible proof of talent.

      Be realistic about the talent level of the golfer. This is especially difficult for parents that think their child is an all-star in everything they do. If the golfer sends recruit tapes to a program that is better than his or her skill level, the time and money will be for naught.

      Look for colleges that are off the radar. Everyone wants to play golf for the big and popular schools but small schools offer an incredible education with lower competition for a golf scholarship.

      Watch the money spent on the recruiting effort. There are people that will guarantee to get a child recruited by a college. Most of what these services offer can be done for little or no cost on one's own. However if time is an issue and money is not then recruiting services can be somewhat helpful. That said, a book on college scholarships could provide the same information at a fraction of the costs.

      Establish a relationship with the coach or recruiter at the school. This can be a just phone call prior to mailing in a video or information. However, college coaches get a lot of recruiting information and mail every day. It makes it harder to dismiss the video or information if the recruiter can put a face, or even a voice, to the name.
