How to Get Recruited by a College Team in Ice Hockey

Many high school ice hockey athletes would love to be recruited by and play college ice hockey teams. Self-promotion goes a long way to get recruited, and should be practiced by all high school athletes who want to play college sports. By sending information to a recruiter, an athlete is more likely to be recruited and play for a college ice hockey team. Read on to learn more.

      Obtain letters of recommendation. These should come from any and all coaches. They should be overwhelmingly positive, and focus on the athletes likely contribution to the success of the college's ice hockey team.

      Be a leader. Captains of teams are usually more highly recruited than other players, simply for their leadership skills.

      Clip newspaper articles. Any newspaper articles that focus on the athlete, as well as the team, should be kept.

      Make a video collage. Assemble a highlight video of good plays that highlight the athlete and his skills. Ask to borrow other player's and coaches' tapes for better angles and shots.

      Attend events sponsored by the college. Any camps or tournaments hosted by the college usually involve the college team's coaching staff. This is a great way to make a good impression and to catch the coach's and recruiter's attention. Remember to behave appropriately and play well, for first impressions are lasting.

      Return requested information in a timely manner. This is good practice for both the athlete and the coaches. If a college is requesting more information, they are usually interested in the athlete. In order to increase the chances of being recruited, turn in all information in a professional and timely manner.
