How to Get Recruited by a College Team in Rowing

Athletes on high school rowing teams dream of being on college rowing teams, and ultimately being recruited by college rowing teams. Besides having the athletic ability to take rowing to the next level, an athlete must be motivated and learn how to promote themselves. This is because many times the athlete has to get the recruiter's attention themselves in order to be recruited. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask coaches for letters of recommendation. These letters can come from high school or recreational coaches. They should be overwhelmingly positive, and highlight the assets the athlete has that will help him in the college sport.

    • 2

Clip and save newspaper articles. Any articles that focus on the athlete or team are keepers. Newspaper articles are a great tool for college recruiters, as they offer an unbiased review of the athlete and their skills.

    • 3

Get together videos. Any videos taken at meets or invitationals of the team are beneficial. Videos that focus on the athlete are great too. Instead of sending several tapes, make a highlight tape with just the most positive video segments.

    • 4

Talk to coaches and other adults involved in rowing. They may have contacts that would be beneficial to the athlete. Many times, they are happy to call and put in a good word for one of their athletes--it never hurts to ask.

    • 5

Attend camps and events sponsored by the college. Behave appropriately at these camps, and be sure to perform well. This is a great opportunity to make a good impression on coaching staff and increase the likelihood of being recruited.

    • 6

Return requested information back to colleges quickly. This applies to the coaches as well. Many times, when colleges request more information, they are interested in the athlete. To increase the chances of being recruited, return the information in a timely manner.
