How to Use the Ribbon in Rhythmic Gymnastics

Graceful, elegant and passionate. These words describe the rhythmic gymnast when she performs with the dance ribbon. The display of color and flair of the ribbon is as important as the performance itself. Ballet, dance and artistic gymnastics synchronize with the ribbon to make this routine a show stopper.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your dance ribbon. There are numerous factors to consider when selecting the ribbon for rhythmic gymnastics. The ribbon will mostly coordinate with the colors and design of the athlete's leotard.

    • 2

Stretch. The length of the dance ribbon is determined by how tall the gymnast is. It is extremely challenging to get a long ribbon to twirl in the air if the reach of the gymnast is short.

    • 3

Feel it. The gymnast has to choose from satin, satin-like or vinyl material for her ribbon. The satin ribbon will flow elegantly through space while the vinyl ribbon may be slightly harder to maneuver. The vinyl ribbon may wrinkle a little easier, but it is cheaper than the satin material.

Wrap it up. The end of the ribbon has a stick which is made from either wood, plastic or fiberglass. The ribbon is adhered to the stick with a non-slip material so the gymnast will have a better grip.

Perform. The rhythmic gymnast will perform to music across the floor while she draws pictures in the air with her colorful ribbon. The competition requires the competitor to make snakes, spirals and throw and catch the ribbon in all directions.
