How Do I Set Up a 16-Team Bracket?
Instructions

-
1
Seed all sixteen teams from No. 1 to No. 16 according to their previous won-loss record, ranking or other criteria. If you have teams tied with the same record, create a tiebreaker system by using criteria such as head-to-head result or total points scored.
-
2
Create your first round matchups. In a 16-team bracket, the highest seed plays the lowest seed and the rest of the matchups follow systematically. Your matchups should be: No. 1 vs No. 16, No. 2 vs. No. 15, No. 3 vs. No. 14, No. 4 vs. No. 13, No. 5 vs. No. 12, No. 6 vs. No. 11, No. 7 vs. No. 10 and No. 8 vs. No. 9. To ensure a competitive tournament, place the No. 1 and No. 4 seeds on one side of the bracket, and the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds on the opposite side. Alternatively, you can reseed after each round to ensure the highest remaining seed plays the lowest remaining seed, and so forth.
-
3
Create your quarterfinal matchups. Unless you reseed, the winners of each first round game move to the quarterfinals. The winner of No. 1 vs. No. 16 plays the winner of No. 8 vs. No. 9. The winner of No. 2 vs. No. 15 plays the winner of No. 7 vs. No. 10. The winner of No. 3 vs. No. 14 plays the winner of No. 6 vs. No. 11. The winner of No. 4 vs. No. 13 plays the winner of No. 5 vs. No. 12.
-
4
Create your semifinal matchups. The winners of each quarterfinal game move to the semifinals.
-
5
Create your final. The winner of the semifinal game from each side of the bracket is paired against each other to determine the championship. The winner of that game is the winner of the 16-team tournament.
