How to Perform on the Uneven Bars

The uneven bars are comprised of 2 separate bars, running horizontally, one higher than the other. These allow a gymnast to utilize momentum created by going back and forth. By the time a gymnast is ready to perform a routine on the uneven bars, she has spent hours of training in the gym under the instruction of a qualified coach. These bars are exclusively used in women's gymnastics.

Instructions

Practice your stunts with a spotter present at all times. When you're learning gymnastics moves on the uneven bars, you can slip and fall easily. Make sure there are thick safety mats under the bars to protect you.

    • 2

Chalk up your hands. As you progress, your palms will produce a lot of friction with the bars. Athletic chalk comes in large cubes and you should rub a piece on your hands before you mount to keep from ripping the flesh on your palms.

    • 3

Learn the basics first. Before you can perform in competition, you will need to master the Kip, the Cast, the Front hip circle and the Flyaway dismount. All of these are used in the beginning USA Gymnastics Federation-required routine for beginning competitive gymnasts. In later levels, you will utilize these moves and expand upon them.

    • 4

Wear the correct apparel. Leotards, designed specifically for gymnasts, fit tightly to prevent loose fabric from twisting around the bars as you spin. Wear a leotard even if you're just practicing.

    • 5

Follow correct protocol if you're going to perform in a meet. From the moment you salute the judge, hold your body erect and assume a professional demeanor. If you fall, take a few seconds to compose yourself and re-mount. After your dismount and finish, turn fully to the judges for your finishing salute.
