Half-Time Activities for Students During a Faculty Basketball Game

Half-time activities have become increasing popular for sports fans. From elementary school games to professional venues, the audience is an integral part of the game. While taking a break from cheering on their favorite faculty member, there are many different types of activities students can do during the 15 minute halftime. Whether it is sports related or a dance competition, here are a couple of suggestions to help you plan your activities.
  1. Knock Out

    • Line up all players at the free throw line, with the first two players holding a basketball. The first player shoots a free throw. As soon as he shoots, the second player in line steps up and takes a shot. If the first player makes the free throw, they grab their rebound and pass it to the next player in line who then shoots a free throw immediately. If a player misses their free throw they must grab the rebound and make a layup before the second player makes their shot. The goal is to "knock" the person out in front of you. You continue this process until only one person is left.

    Monster Ball

    • Place each group at the four corners of the basketball court with all players in each corner in a single file. The groups that are diagonal will be on the same team, so you will have two teams total. Give two corners a basketball in which they will try to knock over a bowling pin that is placed in the middle of the floor. If your team knocks over the pin first they run to their designated basket and try to make as many baskets as possible. Meanwhile the other team must continue to try and knock over the pin. At that point the shooting stops and the baskets are counted. You can repeat this process as many times as you want to play.

    Pac-Man

    • Assemble the class on all the lines on the gym floor, including the three point line and volleyball lines. Chose two or three "pac-men" with a different colored ball then give similar colored balls to the other players. Students must be dribbling the ball at all times. Students must stay on the lines and if tagged must trade balls with the "pac-men." During the activity the moderator can have the players change directions. If a student loses the dribble, they must walk off the line and wait until they are set free from another player. If needed, more "pac-men" can be added to the game.

    Dance Competition

    • If the school has a mascot, this person can select around five to 10 students. They can be be spread out across the gym. Students will then have a chance for freestyle dance for 30 seconds. The students will not know whose song they will have to dance to. You can have everyone dance all at once and then narrow the contestants or you can go in rounds until there is one winner. You can also have props and costumes depending on the age range of the students.
