How to Make a Garter Mum

The mum is a homecoming tradition and is seen on the chest and arms of students as they celebrate their school pride. Garter mums have the same look of the traditional mum but are smaller. These mums are worn on the arm or the leg instead of on the chest like a traditional mum. Creating your own garter mum gives you the ability to express your own personal style while showing your pride.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the garter to the backer using a stapler.

    • 2

Attach the second round backer to the inside of the garter and the first backer using the glue gun.

    • 3

Cut the #3 and #5 ribbon into 4-inch strips and fold them into a cone shape. Glue the folded ribbons around the outer perimeter of the garter backer to create a frame for the mum flower.

    • 4

Remove the stem from the mum and glue the flower to the center of the round backer. The flower should be centered so the ribbon creates a frame.

    • 5

Cut ribbon #5 and #9 into 48-inch lengths and fold in half. Staple the folded half of each ribbon to the backer below the mum.

    • 6

Glue the streamers and curling ribbon to the backer into the desired positions. Glue the embellishments, such as bells and charms, to the backer in the desired position.
