Ideas on What to Wear to Show Support of a Football Team

The cheering, the hot dogs, the mascots, the cheerleaders: Live football games offer plenty of fun for the casual observer and the super fan alike. One of the best things about attending a football game rather than watching it on television is dressing up to show support for the home team. It is a great way to feel connected to your community.
  1. The Polite Accompaniment

    • Anything red will do when rooting for the San Francisco 49ers.

So you're going to the game with friends or on a date with a football fan. You don't know the difference between an end zone and a 50-yard line. You're not even sure if football is the sport with the oblong brown ball or the round orange one. You can -- and should -- still show team spirit. Find out what the home team's colors are and find something in your closet that is that color -- preferably a piece of outerwear to be worn on the top half of your body. Scarves, hats, jackets and sweaters are all appropriate.

    The Casual Fan

    • Chicago Bears fans can even wear gear with actual bears on it.

You follow the home team with mild interest. You go to one or two games per season, sit in the nosebleeds and are mildly elated when the team does well. Take your team spirit dress one step further by purchasing a jersey, sweatshirt or hat with the team logo on it. Wear it with jeans, slacks or a skirt and tights in complementary colors. To show even more support for the team, pair this look with a pennant or jewelry in the proper colors.

    The Classy Fan

    • Unlike the casual fan, you do not sit in the nosebleeds. Maybe you have season tickets; maybe you don't. You sit in a premium box, or perhaps you even watch the game on television at a nice local pub. Class it up a little bit by purchasing cuff links, a scarf or even a tie with the team's logo on it. For women, wear earrings or other jewelry with the team's logo. These looks can also be worn at the office to show support in the days leading up to the game.

    The Die-Hard

    • You definitely have season tickets, and you sit in the best seats available. You call into sports talk radio shows before and after the game. You have several team bumper stickers on your car. To show your support, fit as much team color as possible onto your body. You can spray your hair in team colors and wear as much team-logo gear as you can get your hands on. If you're a group of men, paint your faces and/or chests with team colors and the name of your team.
