How to Blow a Loud Whistle

Sounding a loud whistle demands attention by alerting people to turn in your direction. Blowing a loud whistle without the actual use of a whistle mechanism is dependent upon the placement of your fingers, tongue and lips and the dispersing of air. Once adjusted, the loud sound carries and can be detected from a distance as a signal. Whether interested in gaining proficiency in whistle-blowing to cheer on sports teams or to call your kids home for dinner, perfecting the technique and volume offers a useful skill.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands with soap and water to prevent germs from entering your mouth. Dry your hands on a clean towel. Stand in front of the mirror.

    • 2

Choose between using your left and right pinkie, middle or index fingers. Form a "V" shape with the tips of your designated whistle-blowing fingers.

    • 3

Open your mouth. Place your fingers in the "V" shape under the tip of your tongue so that the tips are touching and the base of your fingers is resting against the corners of your mouth.

    • 4

Push your fingers back so that your tongue curls downward toward your bottom row of teeth. Close your lips around your fingers. Take a deep breath and blow.

    • 5

Adjust the placement of your fingers, lips and tongue to gain a loud, shrill pitch. This can require days of practice and adjusting.
