How to File String Nocks

A string nock is the part of an arrow that fits around the bowstring. It is important that an arrow nock fit snugly around the bowstring so that the bow can shoot accurately. If a nock fits around the bowstring too tightly, however, it can have trouble leaving the bowstring, causing the arrow to shoot off target. If your string nock is too tight, file it down to fit properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the arrow nock into the bowstring to determine how tight the fit is and how much of the nock needs filed down.

    • 2

Remove the string from the nock and use a small file or a piece of sandpaper to gently file the inner part of the nock.

    • 3

Reinsert the bowstring into the nock to see how well it fits. If is fits in snugly but can still be removed easily, then the nock is ready to shoot. If the string is difficult to pull out of the nock, it will need more sanding.

    • 4

Place the small file or sandpaper back into the arrow nock and lightly sand it some more.

    • 5

Place the bowstring back in the nock and test it again. Continue sanding if necessary until the bowstring fits snugly into the arrow nock but still comes out smoothly when pulled.
