How to Wax a Compound Bow

Bows of all types and complexity levels require basic maintenance requirements, including the need to wax the strings. Waxing the bowstrings with specially formulated bowstring wax prevents the strings from becoming abrasive, which can cause skin irritation during use. In addition, waxed strings function better over the pulleys of a compound bow, smoothing the pull of the bow to keep it even. By making string waxing a monthly part of your bow maintenance, you can lengthen the usefulness of your strings, keeping your bow working efficiently from the first pull to the last before string replacement.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the bowstring for any traces of dirt or debris. Spray the string with a non-wax furniture polish and wipe away any dirt with a soft cotton cloth. Use a no-odor bowstring cleaner instead of the polish if you intend to use the bow for hunting purposes. Make certain there are no solvents in the polish, as this will harm the body of the bow anywhere the string makes contact.

    • 2

Spread a thin layer of the bowstring wax over the string by hand. Start at the top of the string and work your way downward, checking with your fingertips to make certain the entire string is covered.

Use a piece of soft leather to go over the waxed string, pressing the wax into the strands of the string until its no longer visible on the string surface. The string should feel smooth and work easily over the pulleys of the bow when drawn after the wax application, with no signs of loose strands in the bowstring.
